20th March 2006 Robot chronicles, uplifting stories from Fanuc: proven robotics technology helps to fill the UK’s skills gap
Its no longer just about volume production where robots are considered, in fact for many years its been more about employing robots to provide the skills and assure consistent quality. Industrial robots, now more than ever before, are playing a critical part in maintaining a manufacturing capability within the UK. It is well documented that the migration of manufacturing to Eastern Europe and Asia is without doubt cost driven and to stay competitive must be a major consideration for any business. However, those businesses that have driven manufacturing demands up the technology ‘food chain’ are reaping the benefits of investment in advanced equipment. more....

5th March 2006 Robot chronicles, uplifting stories from Fanuc: High-speed 6 axes robot provides increased flexibility for automated assembly and packaging applications
To reduce costs, to substantially increase production, to maintain quality standards and still have flexibility is now an essential requirement for any manufacturer. In addition to the outlay on equipment they must have a faster payback period and it is desirable the equipment is so versatile it can be easily moved or changed to perform new duties. To do this the answer is a Fanuc robot. more....

18th February 2006 Episode 9: Clever inspection for filling plastic containers
A major problem for beverage production lines where plastic containers, for example are filled with liquid is they have a short tact time and require a high degree of accuracy. This is made even more important by standards required in the foodstuff industry that is subject to particularly stringent levels of product control (e.g., HACCP). more....

5th February 2006 Robot Chronicles, uplifting stories from FANUC: robotic palletising solution addresses packaging environmental issues
During the recent building boom it may have gone unnoticed by many unless you were a ‘would be’ purchaser, that most building sites are now relatively tidy places. They are also virtually smoke free zones and the constant rubbish burning fire in the middle of the site is just a distant memory. This is driven by legislative and environmental controls, the impact of which goes right back to the raw materials manufacturer. more....

8th January 2006 Robot Chronicles, uplifting stories from Fanuc: robot welding systems can overcome UK skills shortages
Its now an increasingly familiar story of British companies off-shoring their manufacturing invariably to cut costs but also because of skill shortages. For some products this has worked fine but when it comes to quick turn round or short run production there are often problems. more....

28th November 2005 Episode 8: Unit discrimination and control of processes for engine assembly lines
The problem exists that engine assembly lines using mechanical flags and bar codes for model discrimination and process instructions often have the production line stopped because of mechanical failures or other factors. The most common fault not being able to read the bar codes because of oil or coolant. more....

14th November 2005 Robot Chronicles, uplifting stories from Fanuc: heavy weight muscles in on crane-assisted assembly handling operations.
As a fast alternative for the traditional crane a six-axis robot capable of handling 600kg payloads quickly, smoothly and with a high degree of accuracy has been introduced. The Fanuc robot M-900iA/600 allows crane-assisted assembly and handling applications to be undertaken with accuracy, without risk to operators and eliminating damage. more....

Episode 7: LCD and colour filter manufacturing control

There exists a problem that mid-process replacement of LCDs in bar code cassette control systems necessitates frequent exchanges with the host system. This is achieved through a complex system and programming that is very difficult to change. The IPA cleaning process can result in bar code deterioration and drops of water on the surface also increase the likelihood of reading errors. more....

26th October 2005 Bonsai Man Branches Out!
Regular readers of our web news items will recall in one of our ‘meet the team’ series we featured our Sales Manager ‘green fingers’ Darren Mackay who revealed his expertise in growing bonsai trees. Now after 9 years at Micromech he has decided that it was time for a change, and its not just a little one! more....

17th October 2005 Robot Chronicles, uplifting stories from Fanuc: unload system helps increase grinding cell utilisation for bearing manufacturer
When a well-known bearing manufacturer moved three independent grinding operations into one purpose built cell it created a justifiable need for a robotic machine unload system. more....

3rd October 2005 Episode 6: Motion control for high-speed conveyor
Motion control for high-speed conveyors, such as OHT’s and sorters, are often performed with mechanical flags that use photoelectric sensors and optical communications devices. Unfortunately systems based on mechanical flags can suffer from position displacement caused by shocks and vibration that can then result in malfunctions. Wear-and-tear can also lead to problems related to light-source deterioration and interference due to dirt can also occur. more....
