Robot Chronicles, uplifting stories from Fanuc: heavy weight muscles in on crane-assisted assembly handling operations.

As a fast alternative for the traditional crane a six-axis robot capable of handling 600kg payloads quickly, smoothly and with a high degree of accuracy has been introduced. The Fanuc robot M-900iA/600 allows crane-assisted assembly and handling applications to be undertaken with accuracy, without risk to operators and eliminating damage.

Designed for super heavy and large work pieces the M-900iA/600 is a development of the well proven all electric servo-driven M-900iB range. This robot still maintains all the flexibility of the lower payload models with a fast joint 4-wrist speed of 100º per second and the ability to manage high wrist inertias of up to 510 kgm2.

This is aimed primarily at new applications formerly out of the scope of industrial robots, as it is ideal for replacing cranes that are machine loading heavy and sizeable work pieces. The large work envelope with a reach of 2.83metre makes palletising of complete bottle layers and bricks up to 2.7mtr high very straightforward.

Particular attention has been given to space saving by designing the robot's footprint to be relatively small together with a reduced size controller. In addition as there are no motors mounted in the wrist, the arm is very slim allowing operation in confined spaces.

By the use of the intelligent Fanuc RJ3i controller there is the option to have a software package to synchronise movements of several M-900iA/600 units. This enables much heavier weights requiring accurate positioning for example machine fixtures and tooling on inclined planes, to be manipulated precisely and without risk of damage. This would result in two robots being able to handle 1,200kgs and four robots could lift a staggering 2,400kgs.

These robots are a truly uplifting development and their advantages for manufacturers are clear. As systems partners Micromech Robotics and Fanuc can specify, build and install the right equipment that is simple to programme and operate.
